Sword of the Stars is a 4X strategy game, set in space. There are 4 races: Humans, Liir, Tarkas and Hivers. Each race has a unique style of playing and exploring the galaxy which is 3-D.
The Humans use jump engines to travel through subspace at 4 ly/turn, but they must use fixed node points in space and must be able to jump with the energy provided by the power core,no refuel allowed in 5-D.
The Hivers travel very slow at slower than lights speeds, but once arrived, they are able to set up jump gates, traveling instantaneously to any other gate world.
The Tarkas have a common Star Trek hyper drive, enabling them to explore in a free way the galaxy.
The Liir are able to cover great distances, as their ships use infinite-small teleportation,but slow down at half speed near planets and black holes.
Once you encounter a space hazard (meteors, slavers, asteroid monitors, derelicts or space swarms) or enemy ships, a battle occurs in real time and you may see even the crew working inside your cruisers, as all damage is graphical: no health bars.

Born of Blood (included in the Collector's Edition release)
Born of Blood is an expansion for the futuristic 4X game Sword of the Stars. It takes place in 2445, 30 years after the first stellar empires began to expand. Four races clashed and after the first wars an age of diplomacy dawns. A treaty that is torn to shreads when a new race enters the scene: the Zuul slavers, already hinted at in updates for the original game. They have new drive systems, ships, technology, and tactics, including psychic powers. The other races need to form alliances to take on this threat.
Next to the 4 known races, players can command the Zuul fleet, with 90 new ship sections and new tunnel drive technology. There are 15 additional weapons for the ship designs, 25 new technologies such as diplomacy and intelligence gathering techs, 4 additional galactic encounters, a new grand menace, plus 3 unique scenarios and 6 original maps. Other features include diplomatic communications, slavery and trade routes. The GUI has also been tweaked and there are enhancements to the multiplayer mode.
A Murder of Crows
Sword of the Stars: A Murder of Crows is the second expansion pack for Kerberos Production's flagship Sword of the Stars series. It maintains and improves upon the core gameplay of the original release, and of the first expansion, Born of Blood.
A Murder of Crows gives players access to a new race, the ancient Morrigi, who were first encountered as enigmatic encounters in the Collector's Edition release and the related update to the game. No longer hiding in the shadows, the Morrigi have emerged to reclaim the worlds that have been scavenged by the upstart empires, and to enact revenge upon those who have desecrated their sacred holdings.
Sword of the Stars: A Murder of Crows features a number of new gameplay mechanics and expands upon those already present in the game. Included, of course, is a healthy addition of new technology, including several new dedicated ship sections, alternative weaponry, and the exhaustive xenotech tree, which changes the way players interact with the other races in game.
Argos Naval Yard
Sword of the Stars: Argos Naval Yard is the third expansion pack for the Sword of the Stars series. It features nineteen new technologies, including Advanced Drones, Over thrusters, two new Satellite designs, defensive Interceptor micro-missiles, and Polarized Plasmatics, 10 new weapons, creating a whole new weapon type while maintains the gameplay of the former expansions. Argos Naval Yard gives players access to three new scenarios and some multiplayer maps.

Uploader's Note:
The patch occasionally (everytime I try to install the damn thing Laughing) refuses to install, giving 'Patch Failed' error, extracting the update (sots-1.8.0-en-update-install-cand3.exe) and then executing the extracted file seems to help. Moving the update to the root dir of your HDD seems to occasionally help too.
